Safety Tips in Stormy Weather

Safety Tips in Stormy Weather

With winter rain and thunderstorms that occur, wind can cause trees to blow over on power lines. Wet roads also cause traffic accidents that may result in autos hitting power poles. Electric power lines are designed to be out of the public’s reach.

When electric power lines fall to the ground they should be considered “live”, or energized, with electricity flowing. If you see a downed power line:  Don’t touch or try to move the power line, or anything in contact with it.  Do call 911.  Do keep yourself, children and animals far away.

If a power line falls across a vehicle:  If you’re not in the vehicle, stay far away and keep others away while calling 911.  If you’re inside the vehicle, if it’s safe, stay in the car until help arrives.

Be Prepared If You Want to See the Big Trees!

Be Prepared If You Want to See the Big Trees!

Temperatures and weather patterns can be drastically different throughout the valley—but it’s even more extreme in the national parks!

Daytime temperatures can vary 20-30 degrees depending on your location. While shorts and sandals may be appropriate in the foothills in the spring and early summer, it may not be in the higher elevations where there may be several feet of snow on the ground.

Why do I have to use tire chains here?

You can't see the Big Trees without them and you may not be safe without them!

Tire chains or cables may be required throughout most of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks due to snowfall/storms at any time between early fall through late spring/early summer.

Upon entering these chain-restricted areas, visitors need to have proper fitting chains in good repair. Ensure that chains fit and practice installing them prior to entering the parks.
