CA Snowpack Level Above Normal

CA Snowpack Level Above Normal

AP-Officials say several early season storms have pushed California's snowpack _ which supplies much of the state's water _ to well above normal levels.

The state Department of Water Resources said Wednesday that early electronic readings indicate that the water content of California's snowpack is 146 percent above normal for this time of year.

The snowpack usually provides a third of the water used by households, farms and industries across the state. The department says the early storms have also replenished many of the state's reservoirs. Among those showing increases for this time of year include Lake Oroville in Butte County at 111 percent above normal, and Shasta Lake north of Redding at 113 percent.

The DWR will conduct its first official snow survey next week.

More Water for Valley Farmers: DWR Increases Water Delivery Estimate for 2013

More Water for Valley Farmers: DWR Increases Water Delivery Estimate for 2013

Thanks to early season storms, the Department of Water Resources today

increased its water delivery estimate for calendar year 2013 from 30 to 40 percent of requested State Water Project water.

Today’s delivery estimate – or allocation – of SWP water is expected to further increase as more winter storms roll in.  The state normally receives more than 90 percent of its snow and rain from December through April.

Storms last month and those currently sweeping California have replenished reservoirs and deepened the mountain snowpack that normally provides a third of our water as it slowly melts in the spring and early summer.

Lake Oroville in Butte County, the State Water Project’s principal storage reservoir with a capacity of 3.5 million acre-feet, is at 67 percent of capacity, 107 percent of normal for the date.

Better Business Bureau Serving Central California is alerting consumers to reports of phony charity solicitations, supposedly on behalf of the families of victims of the Sandy Hook school shooting in Newtown last Friday.

BBB recommends donors avoid giving to charities or funds through unsolicited phone calls, emails, texts or social media appeals.

Charity scammers strike after natural catastrophes such as hurricanes, floods and earthquakes, as well as tragedies such as the Colorado theater shootings and now the Newtown school massacre.
