Slick Rock Student Film Festival This Saturday
The 10th annual Slick Rock Student Film Festival – Central California’s largest student film competition – is scheduled for Saturday, May 18 at the Fox Theatre in downtown Visalia. This year, the festival received 192 films, representing the work of over 380 students. The high school films receiving a “Premiere Cut” designation will be screened at the theater beginning at 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning. A screening schedule will available at www.SlickRockFestival.org on Thursday, May 16. At 5:30 p.m., students who played a central role in producing "Premiere Cut" films (along with their advisors) are eligible to participate in the Limo/Red Carpet Walk. The awards ceremony will begin at 7:00 p.m.

The Tulare County Office of Education is preparing for the 10th annual Slick Rock Student Film Festival – Central California’s largest student film competition. The deadline for students to submit their films is Monday, April 15. Middle and high school students in the seven South Central Valley counties of Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, Mariposa, Merced and Tulare are eligible to compete in the festival. Instructions for uploading films can be found at www.slickrockfestival.org.

 

Young Entrepreneurs Stepping Up For Edison Challenge!

 

On Wednesday, March 13, teams of young entrepreneurs from Tulare, Fresno and Kings county high schools will present projects at the Visalia Convention Center, in response to Southern California Gas Company Challenge for Student Entrepreneurs.

The Challenge is designed to encourage students to develop products, services or other economic growth ideas that can be applied in the San Joaquin Valley.

Eight high school teams will represent the following schools: Golden West High School (Visalia), Porterville High School, Harmony Magnet Academy (Strathmore), McLane High School (Fresno), Minarets High School (Oakhurst-North Fork), Sierra Pacific High School (Hanford), Lemoore High School, and Mt.

Proteus is sponsoring the Inaugural William M. Maguy 5k Run/2k Walk.

The event planned for April 6th at 7 a.m. at Cutler Park.

Proteus, Inc. is a non-profit community-based organization with 45 years of experience serving economically disadvantaged residents in the Central Valley. We offer a range of programs which include adult basic and vocational education, employment-related services, child abuse prevention, family self-sufficiency, gang prevention, childcare and other services aimed at assisting individuals and families.

Proteus awards several scholarships to deserving students through a competitive application process. Scholarships range from $500 to $1,200 to deserving youth and adults.

Eight-Grader Wins County Spelling Bee, Heads to Washington, D.C.

It took 11 grueling rounds, but Mitchell Miya, an eighth-grader at Pioneer Middle School in Hanford earned the title of 2013 Tulare County Spelling Bee Champion.

He won over a field of 236 tough competitors, on Wednesday, February 27th.

 Mitchell successfully spelled the word “facticide” to win the title.

Mitchell will compete in the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. beginning May 28.

Brandman University will be hosting a job fair on its Hanford campus on March 6th-- specifically for educators. It will go from noon to 4 p.m. at 325 Mall Drive.

School districts with immediate openings will be on hand to review resumes and conduct on-the-spot interviews. Positions being filled include K-12 single and multiple subjects, and special education in multiple schools including Hanford Elementary, Hanford High School, Lemoore Elementary, Coalinga-Huron, and Exeter.

"If you are a teacher looking for a great position in the area, you don’t want to miss this event," said event organizer Shelsy Hutchison, Manager of Community Relations Brandman.

Grant Money Up for Grabs!

The Fresno Regional Foundation (FRF) is accepting applications for its 2013 Youth Grant Cycle and will be granting $206,000 to youth-serving organizations. Of this amount, $105,000 will be earmarked specifically for Dinuba, Cutler-Orosi, Orange Cove, and Reedley for youth and education. The grant amount range is $5,000 to $25,000. In addition, $10,000 will be earmarked for charter school petition development.

FRF will fund organizations serving children 4th to 12th grade that address the social, education, and health challenges impacting youth in our region, while working collaboratively with community partners to provide services.

To share information about grants, FRF will be hosting a grant information webinar on February 21 at 11 a.m. and an in-person grant information session on February 28 at 1 p.m.
